Monitronics Overview

moni-logoMonitronics is the country’s second largest provider of home security equipment and monitoring services. The company is based in Dallas, Texas but serves over 1 million residential and commercial customers across the nation via their network of authorized dealers that provide customers with the equipment needed to get started with a monitoring plan. They serve both residential and commercial customers with monthly monitoring plans overseen by their own Five Diamond Certified Central Monitoring Station. They use top-of-the-line, brand name equipment by Honeywell, GE, and 2GIG, and all systems are backed by Monitronics lifetime warranty. In addition to garnering widespread recognition in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Monitronics was a three-time Frost & Sullivan Alarm Monitoring Company of the Year (2008, 2010, 2011) and 2014 Bronze Stevie Winner. The company has been in business since 1994 and currently holds an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.

Monitronics Reviews

As a company, Monitronics has had over 1,500 complaints closed with the Better Business Bureau in the last 3 years, with over 600 of those in the past 12 months alone. The majority of these complaints have been associated with problems specifically with the equipment or service. Another fair portion of the complaints are associated with billing issues. While every issue is different and circumstantial in its own right, the sheer volume of complaints against Monitronics is cause for concern, especially when their competition don’t experience nearly as many issues. Some customers online have expressed concern with the availability of certain products too. Since the company relies on a network of distributors, not all distributing centers carry the same hardware as others. That means that a customer in Dallas may have access to a wide variety of equipment, while another on the East Coast may be more limited as to what they can purchase and have installed. Though they are by no means the only company in the business to require a lengthy contract commitment, some customers aren’t pleased with the 36-month contract commitment required by Monitronics that requires the customer to pay the remaining balance in the event of a cancellation.

Monitronics Equipment

Mointronics’ website has information about many of their equipment offerings, so it’s a good place to get started. Advertised on their site are three different keypad devices: the 2GIG Go! Control, Interlogix Simon XTi, and the Honeywell Lynx Touch L5100. They also offer several video monitoring options, which include the image sensor with built-in camera, outdoor wireless camera with night vision, indoor wireless pan/tilt security camera, indoor wireless fixed camera with night vision, and the regular indoor wireless fixed camera. They also offer a variety of sensors, including the basic door/window connect sensors, moisture sensors for protection against flooding, advanced motion detectors, glass break detectors, pet-immune motion sensors, shock sensors, and garage door sensors. A wide variety of other home security and protection devices are also listed on the Monitronics website, including fire, heat, and carbon monoxide detectors, keychain remotes, appliance control, lighting control, thermostats, pendant panic buttons, and kwiksetdoorlocks.

Monitronics Packages

moniIn addition to customizing home security packages for the individual customer, Monitronics also offers a Home Touch Premier security package that comes with all the standard equipment to get you started. This includes a full-color touchscreen security panel interface, a keychain remote, a pet-sensitive motion detector, 3 door/window sensors, a yard sign and window decals, 2 light modules, an image sensor, and the Home Touch home automation system accessible via cellphone. Fortunately, Monitronics offers free equipment and installation if you sign up for their 36-month service contract. They offer three different packages: Basic, Home Touch, and Home Touch Premier, that starts at $34.95 and runs to $54.95 per month. The Basic and Home Touch packages do require a $99 activation fee, and the Premier package costs $149 extra to activate.

Monitronics Details

Though Monitronics handles thousands of accounts and is recognized as the nation’s 2nd largest security company, it is not without its flaws. The fact that Monitronics operates via a network of authorized dealers means that not every customer will have access to the same equipment. Additionally, though equipment and installation is free and arguable saves the customer start-up money, they are tied into a 36-month contract and still are forced to pay an activation fee. Despite holding an A+ rating with the BBB and winning several security-industry awards over the years, its recommended that all new customers do some investigating and find out the parameters of working with an independent retailer before signing up for such a lengthy contract.
