Frontpoint Advantages

There are two major items that stand out with Frontpoint and that is customer service and clear pricing. When we spoke with a representative at Frontpoint the conversation was about what we needed to secure our home and not about a pre-packaged deal they were offering. They truly understand that every home is different and we as consumers have different needs. A+ for customer service. I never got the pushy car salesman mentality when speaking with them. They have very simple and straightforward pricing as well. They list everything on their website, there are no hidden fees and they offer a 30-day money back guarantee. Simply put if you are not happy with their home security system, return it. No restocking fees, no hidden fees, it’s exactly how a money back guarantee should work.

The Initial Call

I called Frontpoint and spoke to a representative about securing my home and the rep was very polite on the phone and he walked me through the process of customizing a security system for my home. He asked how many exterior doors ? How many windows are there? Can someone easily gain access to all levels of my home?

I told him that I had 4 exterior door, a bunch of windows on the main floor and no one can access the second floor easily. He recommended a Door/Window sensor for each exterior door and we talked a little more about the layout of my first floor and we decided that two motion sensors would be the best solution since I have two separate areas both with quite a few windows.

I went through the ordering process which is quite simple and we setup my security word and pin number for the home security system. I set my secret word to my favorite food. This keyword is used in the situation if the Frontpoint monitoring team needs to call you to verify an actual emergency so make sure everyone in the home has that information. Also remember your pin, it is a 4-digit code that when entered into your control panel, it will disarm the system.

The Arrival of the Security System

Frontpoint has some great packaging. My “Complete Peace of Mind” arrived in the mail a few days later. It came in a sealed black box.

I double checked that everything I ordered was in the box and it was.

  • 4 Door Sensors
  • 1 Control Panel
  • 1 Yard Sign
  • 2 Motion Sensors
  • Instructions on how to set it up

Here are all of the guides that come with the security system so you can quickly get started. I have to admit that it was so intuitive that I didn’t need them at all.

Eager to get started I began unboxing all of the sensors and put the yard sign together.

The door sensors have an adhesive tape on the back. Just peel and stick but make sure you line up the arrows. They work with a magnet so when the magnet is in contact the door is closed and when it no longer senses the magnet it sends a signal to your control panel. They should be fairly close however on some of my doors they are about an inch or 1 1/2 inches apart and they still work fine.

Here they are from the front. Pretty simple wireless magnetic devices. The batteries in them are lithium ion and they will last for 5 years. Don’t worry if they batteries ever go bad you can order another sensor and your system will let you know.

Here is the sensor on my front door. Pretty inconspicuous.

This is the motion sensor I place in my family room/kitchen area that has the majority of the windows.

Summary of Install

Overall the install was extremely simple and I didn’t even need the quick start guide. Overall time took about 30 minutes from unboxing the package to placing all of the sensors and the yard sign. Now onto activating the system.

On the bottom of the control panel is the Frontpoint security system activation number. I called it and spoke to a gentlemen who walked me through the activation process. This entailed checking all of the doors by opening them and listening for a chime. All my doors passed. The next item was testing the motion sensors by removing the covers this sends a signal to the control panel that a sensor has been tampered with. Both of the motion sensors passed. Next was to see if the control panel was sending all of the signals to the monitoring station. This process uses a wireless cellular signal over the Verizon network. I live about 40 miles outside of the nations capital in a fairly rural area where cell coverage isn’t the best. When we first tested the control panel the signal wasn’t strong enough but we quickly found out that this was due to the place where I mounted the system. I mounted it in my mudroom on the opposite side of my oven and refrigerator.  I believe mounting it this close to major appliance (literally 6-inches away) weakens the signal. I moved it to a place where it was 5 to 6 feet away from the same appliances and the signal went right through. So word of advice is don’t mount it right next to your refrigerator.

During the activation process I also verified my numbers that I can be reached at and the representative walked me through how to arm and disarm the system along with some various settings. I spent about 20 minutes on the phone so overall from opening the box to having a fully functional system it took 50 minutes.

Also, make sure you ask Frontpoint to send you a certificate of monitoring. You can send this to your homeowners insurance company and they will offer you a discount if that is their policy. It is with mine so here’s what it looks like.
